This week we follow up on Connecting Diaspora – IOM The Netherlands – Ambassador Abubakarr Bangura. In the last story about Abubakar he told us his organization, Stichting Sierra Leone Youth Initiative (SLYI), started the pilot of the tailoring course. This was a success and to be continued.
In this story Abubakarr tells us more about the agricultural project in the North of Sierra Leone:
Abubakarr: In the village of Makonkarie, we have 149 acres (60 ha) of land at our disposal. This land is used extensively, sustainably and circularly thanks to a combination of traditional and modern know-how. The land consists of forest and field, where utility crops are planted (nuts, fruits, vegetables, oil palms). The fertilization consists of 100% natural manure from our own chickens and goats.

Abubakarr: We harvested 200 liters of palm oil, pressed it manually and sold it. With that money we purchased more oil palms, cashew, mango and other trees, 2500 in total. The planting of these trees is done in collaboration with the primary school and local community. More than 100 children and young people are involved in this initiative. Thanks to the income from the plantation, we can purchase school uniforms and bags for the children of the primary school in the village
