Today I will be sharing Nellie´s – To Be Worldwide updates
Nellie Ekua Kirschner-Timmer was born in Ghana and half Ghanaian and Dutch. In 2002, Nellie founded the To Be Worldwide Foundation. She would like to make sure that Ghanian children can get most out of their education and develop skills that contribute to a better future and the development of their own local community.
In 2004, Nellie and her Ghanaian mother set up the first To Be Worldwide Educational Resource Center in Takoradi-Ghana. This includes a children's library and facilities for computer training, as well as an extensive activity program tailored to local needs. Everything focused on the children's eagerness to learn; with the aim of inspiring and stimulating. The Center is so successful that a second To Be Center was opened in Cape Coast in 2010.
She is just about to go to Ghana to visit her projects
Nellie” I make it a point to visit the Center at least twice a year. This not only allows me to report back on the activities to our sponsors but also ensures I’m present for significant moments, such as now, when a group of children is graduating from our Nose for Plastic Program.“
The Nose for Plastic Program educates children about the detrimental effects of plastic on the environment. In addition to learning, children actively collect plastic in their communities, which is then picked up by a recycling company. They receive a few cedis for each piece collected, which goes into their piggy banks. The recycling company is so enthusiastic about the program that they’ve joined forces, hosting cycling workshops, crafting flowerpots from large plastic bottles, and even planting tomatoes with the kids.
Nellie: “We’re thrilled to share our program with anyone interested. An organization in Tanzania is the first to adopt our program!”
In 2023 a record number of 1588 children registered to be a member of the educational resource centre. They have reached over 18000 children!
Nellie: “It is wonderful to hear the children’s stories about what their time at the Centre has meant to them. It’s moments like these that fuel our passion, keeping us driven towards our ultimate goal: to see a former student take the reins and run the center one day!”
We´ll get back to Nellie in a few weeks and are looking forward to hear how Nellie´s trip to Ghana has been.
