Bowl Holes

This week we follow up on the work of Local Changemakers Ambassador Mamy Sawa from Congo Stichting Misa

Mamy: "I was in Congo in September to supervise the construction of a water well in Lutendele. This is a small village 30 minutes from the capital, Kinshasa and on the outskirts of Kisangani. It has a rapidly growing population with limited infrastructure.”

Mamy: “Kisangani is the third-largest city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with an estimated 850,000 inhabitants. A significant portion of the population still lack reliable access to clean drinking water. Residents rely on unsafe sources such as rivers, wells, or rainwater, which regularly leads to water-related diseases, such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. “

Mamy: “Through the Misa Foundation, we have a rural development program that also involves constructing water wells. In this way women don't have to travel dozens of kilometers to fetch water and farmers can use the water and the whole community. "

Mamy: “The water point will be managed by the local water committee in collaboration with the municipality and local NGOs. A small contribution per household will be requested for maintenance and repairs. The choice of solar energy guarantees low operating costs and is environmentally friendly.”

Mamy: "The construction of the water point in Lutendele is an important step in the MISA Foundation's mission to support disadvantaged youth and communities in Congo. The project has a direct impact on health, well-being, and community development, and serves as a model for future water projects in the region. Approximately 3,000 to 5,000 residents of Lutendele will have direct access to clean drinking water."
